The Bridge
In front of you is the cement bridge.
The structure allowed access to the commander’s bunker by vehicle. As you can see under this bridge, a trench connected the garage to the kitchen, as well as Colonel Krug’s command post. This trench was part of a complex network that permitted German soldiers to access all bunkers while being protected from grazing shots.
Normally, trenches were made in a zigzag pattern to limit damages in case of explosions, and it also permitted countering of all attacks of the enemy’s infantry.
Renovated in 1997, the northern section of the trench was recently restored by members of the Hillman association with hessian bags filled with cement. The trenches were reconstructed by the same methods used by the Germans during that period.
